Washington – President Obama announced this morning that he would be signing an Executive Order changing Labor Day to Union Day.
“Labor Day has historically honored the American labor movement and the contributions that union workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. Because of these union workers that have made this country so great I have issued Executive Order 13705 officially renaming Labor Day to Union Day.” announced Obama.
With Labor Day changed to Union Day many in attendance asked if it is still a federal holiday.
White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest stated, “Union Day will remain a federal holiday for union members only starting in 2016.”
Private employers may still allow non-union employees the day off at their discretion.
